A novel process is described for controlling sprouting in potato tubers by exposure of the tubers to an effective amount of anisic acid, coumaric acid, gallic acid, or mixtures thereof. Such early exposure maximizes the sprout control effectiveness and maintains the processing quality of the tubers. Aim to store no more potatoes than you can use during the fall and winter. You do not want the potatoes to lose their moisture content, whether it is for cooking or for winter storage that you plan. Also, don’t store them near onions, bananas, or other fruit — this will encourage them to sprout faster. Moreover, this sprout inhibition may be achieved without adversely effecting final color quality (i.e., darkening) of the processed product which may occur with use of some previously reported sprout inhibitors. The following examples are intended only to further illustrate the invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention which is defined by the claims. Also, it’s best to take them out of the plastic bag and put them in a basket or breathable cotton sack. Other objects and advantages of the invention will become readily apparent from the ensuing description. Store good-quality potatoes properly, and they'll be less likely to go bad or sprout prematurely. While as a practical matter, it is expected that pure or substantially pure anisic, coumaric or gallic acid (or a mixture of two or all three) will be formulated with a carrier, impure acid in naturally occurring compositions may also be formulated with a carrier. A method as described in claim 1 further comprising exposing said tubers to a second sprout inhibiting agent. Cold temperatures are fine for potatoes, but too cold temperatures can ruin the texture and cause them to turn dark when cooked. If your potatoes are homegrown, allow them to cure before you store them. This can be particularly important when planting cut up chunks, as not all eyes will develop sprouts. Storage temperature and humidity.. Following storage, the tubers may be removed from exposure to the acids and they will begin to sprout within several days. Manthem, Barbara, et al., Effects of Salicyclic Acid on Growth and Stomatal Movements of Vicia faba L.: Evidence for Salicyclic Acid Metabolization , Journal of Chemical Ecology, vol. Once spring arrives, those potatoes are going to start sprouting. Plastic bags won't allow them to breathe and will shorten their shelf life considerably, so remove them from a plastic bag if you've brought them home in one. Potatoes and other tuber crops, Microbiology and biochemistry of oil-palm wine, Composition for coating fruits vegetables and fowl eggs especially useful for organic produce, Process for the anti-germination and/or biocide treatment of bulbs or tubers by means of CIPC and a terpene or terpene oil, Toxic metabolite modulation in consumable products, Composition containing allyl isothiocyanate and its use, The intake of water through dead root systems and its relation to the problem of absorption by transpiring plants, Effect of alcohols and their interaction with ethylene on the ripening of epidermal pericarp discs of tomato fruit, Use of benzoxaboroles as volatile antimicrobial agents on meats, plants, or plant parts, Microbicidal formulation comprising an essential oil or its derivatives, Solutions of CIPC and of a terpene or of a terpene oil and their uses for the antigerminative treatment of bulbs or tubers, Lapse for failure to pay maintenance fees, Information on status: patent discontinuation, Expired due to failure to pay maintenance fee. In accordance with the preferred embodiment, for best processing quality, the tubers should be exposed to the acids prior to breaking dormancy or as early as possible thereafter. Keep all these tips in mind: If you grow your own potatoes, it's especially important to store them properly. Check on your potatoes regularly and remove any that are soft, shriveled, or sprouted so they don't cause more potatoes to go bad. Of course, if you're a gardener, sprouted potatoes aren't a problem at all. And finally, make … So, sprouts, which are vulnerable once they emerge from the soil, come equipped with defensive toxins called glycoalkaloids. 10. short-term exposure of potatoes to ethylene gas encouraged more sprouting while long term exposure suppressed it. Suitable amounts and concentrations may be readily determined by the practitioner skilled in the art. 5,129,951 and 5,139,562), carvone or naphthalenes such as dimethyl naphthalene (Lewis and Kleinkopf, 1993, Potato Grower of Idaho, 22(7):20-21) the contents of each which are incorporated by reference herein. It can also increase the size and weight of the harvest. This information, however, comes from experiments carried out in the 1930’s and reported for … An effective amount is defined herein as that quantity of anisic, coumaric and/or gallic acid that significantly inhibits potato tuber sprouting in comparison with untreated tubers. The tubers in each vessel were monitored for sprout growth weekly following jar filling, and the number of tubers having sprouts counted. The best place to store potatoes is in a ventilated, cool, dark, and humid environment. Some gardeners store potatoes in large lots in cooler temperatures to keep them from sprouting and keep a small quantity inside their house for immediate consumption. 22 B 23 b. Kim, Seong Ryong, et al., Identification of Methyl Jasmonate and Salicylic Acid Response Elements from the Nopaline Synthase (nos) Promoter , Plant Physiol., 1993, 103, pp. No. Once sprouting was observed, tubers were removed from the jar and processed into chips, and evaluated for processed color quality by measurement of Agtron color reflectance values for fried chips. Treatment with the acids of this invention does not kill the tubers or permanently impair their ability to sprout, thereby rendering them suitable for use with potatoes intended for seed use. The potatoes in both bags looked fine until the three-week point, when one of … Roushdy, H. M., et al., Lower radiation Levels for Better Storageability of Potatoes and Onions Using Certain Chemical Treatments , Radiation Preservation of Food, Proceedings of a Symposium, held in Bombay, 13 17 Nov. 1972, pp. For many centuries, the Incas of South America and their descendants buried potato tubers in pits that were layered with soil and the leaves of Muna plants that belonged to the mint family Lamiaceae, and the genera Minthostachys and Satureja.
